Ans. The title of the play is so much flauntingly vague' without any obvious point-that its choice has evoked much research and fanciful conjectures. Some trace it to a line in Lodge's Address to the Gentleman Readers' prefixed to his Rosalind :- "If you like it so; and yet I will be yours in duty if you be mine in favor." An echo of this is found in the Epilogue of the play "I charge you'. O women, for the love you bear to men, to like as much of this play as please you, etc." This at least explains the origin of the title. As to its deeper meaning, the author obviously suggests that the play should please both men and women among the audience. If it does not do so, each member is at liberty to like as much of it as he chooses. "Take it just as you like it--the author has done his best to satisfy all tastes.

Some, however. see in it a retort to Ben Jonson's boastful line in the epilogue of Cynthia's Revels.

I'll only speak what I heard him say.
By-it is good and if you like it, you may.
From the fact that about this time Shakespeare was involved in the 'war of the theaters and had reason to be offended with Ben Jonson, the conjecture is not without point.
The German Ulrici suggests that in this play, Shakespeare allowed every character to act as they please, hence the title. Finally, we have Bernard Shaw's opinion the play being a 'romantic nonsense': Shakespeare publicly disclaimed any responsibility for its pleasant and cheap falsehood by throwing it in the face of the public with the phrase "AS YOU LIKE IT.
